Mark Twain Pilot House!

For those who have never enjoyed a ride aboard the Mark Twain in the Pilot House, I cannot express what an enjoyable time you are about to experience! Wow. Such a different perspective of the park at the slightly higher altitude. Our Captain, Ricky, was so polite and quite informative on the operation of the ride, the history, the duties of the crew, he even explained some details regarding Fantasmic and how the Mark Twain is converted to assist in the massive production.
Thanks so much Captain Rick, your enthusiasm and charisma is appreciated and Disney is very fortunate to have a cast member who truly represents the philosophies as set forward by Walt.

Cafe Orleans!

Being a three day weekend, we stopped by the park tonight and for the first time in quite a few years, enjoyed dinner at Cafe Orleans. Last time we visited there, it was relatively simple cuisine, nothing overly fancy, just a comfortable place to take the family.
Now however, reservations are requested, immediate seating is sometimes available, and the dinning is full service via a very well trained crew. Pretty big change, but all that said, it was quite enjoyable!
My wife enjoyed the Ratatouille with French Onion Soup and I had the Creole Style Chicken Caesar Salad with Gumbo.
Approx. cost was $23.00 per person with soup, drink, and entree.
Service was efficient, our waitress took the time to make sure everything was prepared correctly. It was a beautiful night, so dinning on the patio was splendid. Formal dinners at the club are exceptionally enjoyable, but for a nice rather low stress evening out, I would highly recommend Cafe Orleans.
A huge number of guests were ordering the Monte Cristo and I heard a number of them commenting on how tasty it proved to be. OK, maybe next time we'll try that!
Honestly, the brains behind Disneyland Food Services appear to be putting a great deal of effort on improving park food. While yes, the prices are a bit higher than similar restaurants outside the park, one does not mind paying a slightly higher price for the park's unchallenged ambiance. Enjoy!

Storytellers Cafe

For those who know me, they'll all agree I don't get out much! Pretty boring life, just work, work, work and the occasional visit to Disneyland (living next door to the park is very convenient!).

For the first time since the opening of the Grand Californian Hotel, my family and I finally enjoyed dinner at the Storyteller Cafe. Hard to believe we had never set foot in this unique restaurant, but we're old school Disney and do not venture out of the original park very often. A dear friend who is a Disneyland Cast Member told us to give it try, that she and her friends frequented quite often and now I can see why!

We met the manager, James, who was extremely polite and actually gave us a tour of the restaurant, explaining the dinner buffet with great attention to detail and familiarity with his management position. After seeing this first hand, we were sold!

For approx. $28.00 per person, the buffet is an experience which cannot be missed. New York strip, roast turkey, butternut squash, roast beef, wonderful bread pudding, garlic mashed potatoes, wonderful corn chowder and also home made corn muffins! We had a lovely meal and although the restaurant was very busy the staff was truly at their peak.

James visited our table to make sure everything was satisfactory, we just could say enough great things!

If you're visiting Disneyland please don't miss the Storytellers Cafe. James said the breakfast buffet was exceptionally popular and always draws a hungry crowd, I can certainly see why! We'll be there next Sunday morning!

To all of our friends and visitors, I wish you all a wonderful 2009!

Living approx. 1/4 mile from Disneyland, its wonderful to hear the Mark Twain and steam locomotives as they carry guests throughout the park, not to mention the nightly fireworks viewed from our own backyard. When the cloud cover is just right, we can even hear the Yeti roaring within the Matterhorn. This past Wed morning at approx. 3:00 AM I was awaken by the sounds of Auld Ang Syne. I had to stop and think a moment, 'Had I missed a day? Was it New Years and somehow I'd missed it?' No, it was Disneyland preparing for the New Years celebration and they must have been calibrating their speaker system, preparing the big event. While I prefer not to be awoke from a cozy nights sleep, this was certainly a unique and acceptable cause. Living in Anaheim, one never knows what to expect from the Magic Kingdom!

Lovely at Christmas

I haven't visited the club in some time, so I was quite pleased to have enjoyed a wonderful Club 33 lunch this past week. The decor as Christmas is quite lovely, subtle, not over powering as in most malls and dept. stores. Tasteful and festive keeping in the holiday tradition of Disneyland.
The halibut was delicious, flaky and white, wrapped in a lightly seasoned crust. Also provided was a lovely Creole style soup, spicy to be sure, but quite enjoyable. The soup was almost of a bisque consistency, I would highly recommend!
In keeping with the holiday traditions, home made gingerbread men were added to the dessert bar along with a sumptuous selection of tarts, cakes, and holiday creations such as the lemon filled eclair snowmen!
The holidays are simply not complete without a visit to Club 33!

December 5th, a very special day!

According to a recent e-mail, December 5th not only marks Walt's birthday, but its the day (at least for 2009 memberships) that Club 33 has mailed out membership invitations! For those lucky few who finally received your letter, congratulations! What a special day it must be for the Disney fan who has patiently waited almost 9 years to one day open the mail box and find a letter with the famous '33' in the upper corner. How many were sent remains a mystery but rest assured somewhere in the world, a Disney fan is smiling ear to ear.

While walking through Adventureland I couldn't help but notice the trunk of the second Tarzan tree, located near the East base of the POC bridge, appeared to have a face in it. Looking closely, it suddenly became apparent, it was Jabba the Hutt! Well, I asked my wife and daughter and they agreed but were amazed they never noticed it previously. The is truly the work of a Disney Master Sculptor. Rosemary from www.findingmickey.com investigated the somewhat random face and confirmed that, yes indeed, it appears to be the Hutt!

The artist who created wonderful piece has our most sincere congratulations, this is one of the best Easter Eggs I have yet to discover within the park.

As the club was opened in 1967, the Disney motion picture 'The Happiest Millionare' was also released. To commemorate this event, the club now features actual costume design sketches for your viewing. They're really quite lovely, be sure to view them in The Lounge Alley.

Our last visit to Club 33

Well, I really must admit, we have a wonderful evening on 10-18-2008. Curt was our waiter, polite, efficient, very warm and friendly with 20 years experience inside the club. Wow!
Curt was so nice to spend some extra time with us and explain the history of the new decor which is quite lovely. If you have a chance to visit the club, don't pass it up! While I did miss much of the New Orleans pirate and Haunted Mansion artwork, the new decor was quite lovely. The Trophy room also has a nice, fresh appearance with some of the 'British men's club' style returned.
I highly recommend the baked peach pastry with homemade walnut ice cream. Apparently Chef Marcel received an ice cream maker and he's making the most of it, all to our benefit of course. My tailor would agree, he appreciates the extra work.
The Heirloom Tomato and Bell Pepper Soup was incredibly satisfying. While not quite as heavy as their traditional bisque, I would highly recommend this.
I heard from the staff that a menu change may be in the works for the on coming Winter season. Hopefully they'll bring back their famous Butternut Bisque and those wonderful Pumpkin Creme Brulee. If you've never experiened Creme Brulee baked inside a spiced miniature squash, your life is not yet complete.
The Colorado Lamb Chops was perfect, but honestly, I could have eaten at least two to three more. They were so tasty, I had to purposely control myself and eat slowly to make them last. Great job Chef!
Thanks especially to Eric Quezada, he's such a wonderful manager. Eric was very cognizant of our presence and truly went out of his way to make us feel at home. Although we're not yet members, Eric and Curt made us feel as though we were and that is what makes Disneyland 'The Happiest Place On Earth!'

Originally I had not ordered this wonderful rich soup, but after tasting my wife's, well, I simply had to! It is wonderful! If you're going to the club be sure to try this, it's not quite as rich as a standard bisque, but oh so amazing! My wife actually wanted to have three or four bowls as her dinner entree!

We enjoyed dinner at the club tonight, and well, it was wonderful! Curt is an incredibly nice waiter, now going on his 20th year. That is really quite an impressive figure!
Eric was hand to make sure everything was running smoothly and as usual, he's an incredible manager. Thanks to cast for making this an enjoyable Saturday night!
I was quite fortunate in selecting the Colorado Lamb Chops, cooked medium. Crusted with pecans with a peach pastry for dessert, I'm quite content fellow!

Here is a story you'll love!
My family and I had dinner tonight at PF Changs near Disneyland in the platinum triangle area. My daughter desperately wanted to try the Italian cream drink, you know the one with ginger ale, half and half, grenadine. She pulled up Dr. Lee's blog on her 'IPhone', found the recipe blog posting, handed her phone the PF Changs bartender and ask if he would please make this drink. He looked at it and said, "Wow, that looks great, where did that come from?"
She explained about the blog and he very impressed. He made the drink for her, charged her very little, then made one for another guest who was watching. I think that will soon be a regular bar item for them!
Great job!
The drink was so enjoyable and truly perfect for families and those who do not drink alcohol.

Dress Code Update Regarding Footwear!

We just received an e-mail from a Club 33 member that stated some of his guests were not allowed into the club due to sandles. Not low dollar flip-flops, but more expensive style sandals. The guest had to exit the club, obtain appropriate foot wear and then re-join the party within. So, if you're going to the club, be sure to check your foot wear!

I have received quite a few e-mails regarding the dress code enforcement at Club 33. The information we have posted was taken directly from their written publication handed to guests as they check in at Guest Services.
If you are not quite sure as to your chosen attire, please be sure to ask the member who arranged your and don't take any chances. I have heard of large parties being turned away due to dress code issues and this makes for a very bad experience for all involved. The club is there to serve you and make your evening memorable. Follow their simple rules and you'll have a magical meal!

Dress Code Follow Up!

After speaking with a few members, it does appear the club is refusing entry to guests who are not in compliance with the dress code. If you are a guest of a member and have reservations, please be sure to keep an appropriate change of apparel within access. Perhaps a locker within the park.
This is important to your member, because failure to meet dress requirements will mean non-entrance, which for your member could be a substantial charge equal to the price of a park hopper ticket.
So, if you're not sure, check with your member contact regarding dress code. Your member contact will want you to enjoy the club and does not want to incur any penalties.
I was told of a party of six being refused entry due to dress code violations.

Dress Code Update! No Shorts At Dinner!

Just a quick note to let everyone know the club is no longer allowing shorts during evening meals. While certain styles of walking shorts may been tolerated, such is no longer the case. If you are enjoying the park during the day, please have appropriate attire available to meet the club's dress code requirements.
The club will turn away guests who fail to meet the dress code.
As for me, I'm behind the dress code 100%. I personally feel the club is a very special place and if dining in the evening, a suit and tie always looks best. The elevated atmosphere seems to hold a bit more grace and dignity when accompanied by suitable attire.

A fresh look for Club 33

For some time now the club has been closed, plastic taped over the windows and workman busy within, painting, wall papering, staining, and sewing.
Sharon and Jazan were nice enough to supply a wonderful series of photos from their recent trip, so we developed a small gallery to display their photos. Jazan is actually a quite famous artist. Looks as though they had a fun filled evening!

The History of the '33' Revealed!

For years all of us have wondered exactly how Club 33 was named. So many rumors and myths, all of them making perfectly good sense but few knew the true answer.
Thanks to the former manager Mr. Roger Craig, we now have the answer!

For those short on time, we've posted the list in our blog!
Walt wanted a place to entertain VIP's and dignitaries, a place to negotiate contracts, bring family and friends, a quiet more formal venue away from the crowds. He wanted it next to his small apartment, so the current location in New Orleans Square was perfect. The park featured 33 original lessees who helped finance the park and were allowed to sponsor attractions, food services, and so on. If you review the list, you'll instantly recognize many of the names.
Since these sponsors were going to be the initial members of the club and allowed access, the name was chosen based upon their exact number, 33.

A Phone Call At 12:00AM!

Well, the internet has certainly made the world a smaller place. I was checking e-mails on 3-29-2008 and there was one that arrived at approx. 12:00 midnight asking me to call regarding the Club 33 Kennedy page and that now was OK.
Pretty strange, so of course, I called.
On the other end was a former manager of Club 33 who had actually worked there opening day of the club. Of course, we talked for quite some time and we'll be communicating soon to add more info to our site.
He wrote regarding Robert Kennedy as he was pleased to see him mentioned on the site.
His name was Roger C., he was working the night Kennedy had dinner with his family. He also stated that in the early years of the club a guest registrar was kept at the reception desk and while the records have probably been lost years ago, Kennedy did in fact sign in.
Wow! So, it is true! 2 days prior to his assassination Robert Kennedy enjoyed an elegant meal at Club 33.

Postcard from 6-3-1968

I located this item on ebay, previously sold however, where the writer mentions shaking hands with Robert Kennedy while aboard the Mark Twain! The date: 6-3-1968. Only one year after Club 33 opened!

An e-mail arrived in my box, addressed simply, 'Robert Kennedy-Club 33'. Well, this was certainly interesting, so I waisted no time in opening such. The e-mail was from an elderly gentleman who requested to remain anonymous and he explained how on 6-3-1968 Robert Kennedy was visiting Disneyland with his children and thusly enjoyed dinner at Club 33.
I wasted no time and proceeded to research the last days of Robert Kennedy, and sure enough, it appears this kind fellow was correct. While there is no mention of Club 33, I have no doubt Kennedy would have been allowed access for security reasons. If there is anyone who may have worked at the Club or the park during that period, your expertise, knowledge and input would be appreciated.

It was 6-5-1968 that Robert Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel, a tragic day for America. He passed on 6-6-1968 at approx. 1:44AM.

Consolation can be found in knowing that he was able to spend quality time with his family prior to the tragic event.

All Aboard The Lilly Belle!

Ever noticed the little red train car with the name plate "Lilly Belle"? Watch the trains next time your in the park, normally it's pulled behind the Holiday 5. Can't miss the private car, it's simply beautiful, decorated with red mohair interior, dark woods, stained glass, comfortable chairs, wow!
The train car was named after Walt's wife, Lillian and she helped to select much of the interior.
Recently restored, Club 33 members have access to the car to entertain guests, or, just hop on at Main Street Station and exit at New Orleans Square to dine at the club. Life is good!
There are a number of Disney train sites on line with a great deal of information regarding the various engines and history of the trains. Pretty fun reading if you have a little time to spend.

Snoop Dog In The Mouse House!

While this has absolutely nothing to do with Club 33, its funny so I thought what the heck, I'll blog it.
We popped in Disneyland on Easter night to enjoy dinner and while walking down Main Street I noticed a large group of people walking by all wearing matching black t-shirts. They were being assisted/escorted by several Disney cast members. I looked down and walking next to me was a little fellow who looked a bit familiar, then I realized, it was Snoop Dog. They must have been leaving the park after spending all day there, or perhaps they were working on a production. They all looked rather tired.
Anyways, sorry about this, not much to do with the club, I just thought it was interesting!

Hello Everyone,

A little history about me working at Disney, it all started the very first part of December 1981 when I went for an interview. I remember opening the mail, and looking at the letter stating that I was a new cast member, I was very happy. My first attraction that I worked on as a new cast member, was the Mark Twain and this was December 12, 1981. Everybody was surprised that I got to work the Mark Twain, because all new cast members always had to work the Jungle Cruise first. It was there on the Mark Twain, where I got most of my guest compliments. In 1982 I also worked the shooting gallery, next to the Jungle Cruise, and the tree house. It was in the middle of summer of 1982 I was finally trained on the Jungle Cruise. It was about this time at the end of summer, and with 9 guest compliments I transfered to Club 33. My first job at the Club was dishwasher which I did for about 6 months. My next job was bus boy which I did for about a year. I can remember when my manager, Tom asked me if I wanted to be a bartender, and I laughed, and said, "Yes ," because I don't drink. It was there Dr. Lee was born, a future bartender hall of fame.

Fantasmic From The Balcony!

Located directly above Cafe Orleans are the balconies of Club 33. While visiting the club in the evening hours, guests are welcome to step onto the balconies and enjoy Fantasmic. The balconies offer a unique perspective of the show from this semi-secluded location, and what a show it is!
Now, while your view is very good, there is a tree which occupies the dinning court of Cafe Orleans and although the tree is constantly trimmed, it can slightly inhibit your view. Not too bad, just try to ignore the branches.
There best view is from the South facing balconies, there are two. Although seating within the club is very limited, the balconies are small and many guests wish to enjoy the show. Keeping this in mind, you may want to go out a few minutes early and secure the best possible view.
We always try to time the show between the main course and dessert. The staff is very familiar with the show schedule so it's common to return from the balconies and find your coffee cup full and dessert being delivered right on time.

Celebrate With Mickey

Character meals within Disney parks have really taken off! Even Goofy has his own kitchen offering wonderful meals the entire family can enjoy. Club 33 takes it one step further!

Say for example its your wife's birthday and she simply adores Pluto. Well, members of Club 33 are able to notify the club in advance and for a fee, that special character will appear with open arms, ready for an array of hugs, photos, and whatever else guests do to those poor costumed cast members who bake within synthetic fur all day just to make us smile. To those few character cast members, I extend my utmost thanks and appreciation. It simply wouldn't be Disneyland without you dedicated few walking about, making imagination a bit more like reality.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and the rest of the gang are waiting in wings for your next Club 33 event.

A Visit To 'The Cabinet'

It's small, doesn't have any large banners or labels, no visible price tags, no neon, actually nothing at all to draw your attention. Subtle is an understatement. Yet, there it sits, full of wonderfully creative trinkets, shirts, golf balls, the occasional jacket, Christmas ornaments, and of course the famous Club 33 lapel pin. Even wine glasses appear from time to time as do coffee mugs.
A visit to the club simply isn't complete without a short visit to the cabinet to see whats available.
For a short while the club offered incredibly beautiful Letterman's style jackets, they didn't last long and if I recall correctly, only 333 pieces were produced.
Members may purchase beautiful "Member-Club 33" license plate frames, but you must be a member.
At my last visit in December, a wonderful Boyer lithograph of Walt enjoying breakfast at the club was still available. I had mine framed by FrameFetish.com and it turned out amazing.
The most popular souvenir sold by the club has got to be the standard lapel pin, costing approx. $10.00. When my daughter was into pin trading, she used them to negotiate deals for rare pins and did pretty well!
Some years back they offered a beautiful dark blue blanket with a large monogramed '33' on the corner, you'll find them on ebay from time to time. A matching scarf was also available.
Most of the Club 33 staff use black ink pins with the club logo silk screened on the side, these are also available to purchase.
So, next time you pop into the club, stop by and see whats new in the gift cabinet. You'll never know what you might find.

Celebs At The Club-No Paparazzi!

While dining at the club, its a pretty common occurrence to be sitting next to a celebrity. Common is probably an understatement, it's more the norm.
Wow, imagine that, sitting behind you is Tom Hanks or Johnny Depp, Elijah Wood or Anthony Hopkins! Takes a minute to sink in and the urge to ask for an autograph or at least shake hands becomes priority. You'll probably forget about the food getting cold right in front of your eyes. I'm just as guilty as the next person, but, self control must win out.
Take a deep breath, don't stare, focus on your own guests and have a wonderful evening.
Try to imagine being in their position, just wanting to enjoy a nice dinner with no crowds, no photographers, just family and friends. Everyone has a reasonable expectation to privacy, that's why they're in the club.
I know this all sounds rather rudimentary but it is worth mentioning and is a fun subject to blog about! Thanks!

So, why the web site?

A few people have asked, 'hey, why in the world did you build this web site?' I actually have pretty decent answer.

When I first discovered Club 33 and was able to secure reservations, I wanted to learn about this unique establishment and know exactly what we were getting into. At the time , there were very few sites all with only limited information. Ken Witworth's site was extremely helpful and he's a very nice fellow. He donated a number of photos to our current site.

While Ken's site was helpful, I wanted to dig a little deeper and research every facet of the club from the day it opened, the furnishings, the planners, the changes throughout the years and any other pertinent information available. It was almost like trying to research Area 51, plenty of rumors, tons of innuendo, and a number of dead ends.

Our reservation day came and went and we greatly enjoyed our first lunch of many at Club 33. I realized however that we were pretty nervous going to the club, the first 15 minutes were a bit stressful as we simply didn't know what to expect.

When I arrived home from the park (Disneyland), the light bulb turned on and the idea of starting a small web site focusing on Club 33 was born. I thought it would be wonderful to have a site where pending guests of the club could visit and learn about the inner workings of the club, the food, the service, the dress codes, furnishings and history. Within days the site was up and running.

It's now been almost eight years and here we are! We're not the most visited site on the net, most Disney fans have never heard of us and that's OK. Our goal was never to be a million visitor per day site (although that would be wonderful), but like the club itself, we're here assisting those few fans who enjoy and appreciate the club and little known places and facts which make Disneyland a truly magical place.

Kids In The Club

Elegant, romantic, the sound of wine glasses clinking together, couples holding hands on the balcony, its just another night at Club 33. Such a picture perfect atmosphere, it would be a travesty to spoil such a delightful environment.

OK, let's jump back into reality for a moment and confront the big issue, or in some cases, lots of little issues who run around wreaking havoc where ever they land. Kids! Gotta love them, they're mine, they're yours, they're ours! Procreation at it's best!

I get quite a few e-mails from soon-to-be guests, asking if they can take their children to the club. Speaking from my own experience, the answer is 'yes, the club allows children.'

We have enjoyed taking our daughter to the club since she was 9 years old. The staff was always very polite and went out of their way to give her extra attention, making sure her visit was enjoyable.

So, we've established that kids are allowed which is good news for families but I can't help expanding on this just bit. Again, my opinion, do with it what you wish.

When you're at the club, remember where your at and that many of the people around you have been waiting months, perhaps years to dine there. Most of the guests within the club are not actual members, so their visit is probably a special event and/or their first time within. Knowing this, use your utmost parental abilities to keep the little darlings under tight control and above all, quiet. There is always ample background noise within the club to cover light chatter, but not much more.

If the little one cries, have the courtesy to remove them to the hallway or restroom where you can comfort and attend as required.

Place yourself in the position of a first time club guest, who may have been waiting months to visit the club and perhaps financially, considers the visit to be a rather large financial expenditure. Does all this make sense? It is a touchy subject to be sure, but as patrons of the club we must place this high upon our list of societal requirements.

We were visiting the club one night and the manager noticed a little boy sleeping in his mother's arms. The manager assisted the mother in placing the child on the large leather sofa in the Lounge Alley and then wrapped the child in a beautiful dark blue Club 33 embroidered blanket.

Somehow, that single moment captured the essence of what Club 33 is all about.

Signing In The Unknown-Why So Careful?

There is little doubt that most who know of the club would love nothing more than to dine there at least once. A true right of passage for any Disney fan. I was in the same boat, don't feel alone.

I have been asked by quite a few visitors to our site, "why do members hesitate to sign in those they do not know?" Good question actually, with an equally good answer. Responsibility.

A member is responsible for every guest they allow within the club. There have been incidents where a member makes reservations for a person who enters the park, enjoys their day and then departs without fulfilling the requirement they dine at the club. In a case such as this, the member must pay for the persons admission into the park and their guests. You can imagine how that could add up rather quickly.

Another scenario is the guest who dines at the club proceeds to run up a check and then departs without paying either dine & dash style or via complaining about some issue of food or service. Unscrupulous, oh yes. Common, probably not. A definite risk most members are not willing to take.

One cannot blame the cautious person for protecting their membership.

First Visit Angsts!

Alright, a member arranged your first visit and the big day has finally arrived.
Nervous?
Don't know what to expect?
I can tell you with all honestly, I was and didn't! I searched on the internet and found only limited information and I was a typical guy, refusing to ask my friend about the club's protocol. I never ask for directions either. Explains why I'm so often driving in circles in downtown Los Angeles watching the same buildings continually pass by.
With family at hand, we began our first visit to the club, choosing lunch, figuring the atmosphere would be less formal. Worked out pretty well!
For some strange reason, I'm always nervous pushing the buzzer, waiting to hear, "I'm sorry, but we don't have your name on our list." Hasn't happened yet, hopefully never will. I can somehow imagine the hordes of guests in line for The Blue Bayou laughing hysterically at the idiot trying to sneak into Club 33.
We entered the club with a warm greeting from the hostess. She was very demur and soft spoken and probably picked up on the fact that we had no idea what was going on.
Wasting no time in taking the laboring oar, she gave us a brief introduction to the club and stated our table was being readied. Her small phone rang, our table was ready!
She walked to the French lift, opened the door, we climbed aboard, our visit had officially begun.
The welcome continued on the second floor, where the maitre'di opened the lift door and introduced himself. He asked if this was our first visit, we answered in the affirmative, and he offered to give us a brief tour.
By now the tension was beginning to fade, the smell of rosemary filled the air and bustling crew members were busy carrying trays of food to the buffet tables.
WOW! This was amazing. How all this had remained such a secret was beyond reason.
Long story short, within minutes we felt right at home. The staff was polite, the cuisine was delectable and the assortment was most ample. We simply fell in love with this unique establishment and looked forward to our next visit, which couldn't come soon enough.
So, if you're going to visit the club for the first time, don't be nervous. No reason to be!
Sure, you'll have to meet their dress code, no cell phones in the dining room (thank God!), and don't harass the celebrities, do not over-intoxicate yourself, you know, just follow the common rules of courtesy.
Take your time and enjoy your stay, it will be over before you know it.
Oh, before I forget, take photos! I didn't take a camera on our first visit, didn't want to seem to presumptuous and I regret it now. The years pass quickly, kids grow up, photos are priceless.

How Did I Learn About Club 33

It must have been around Oct. of 2000, that I finally asked a wonderfully friendly work acquaintance about his gold lapel pin. An understated gold pin, consisting of the tradition three circles forming Mickey's silhouette.

Funny how you can know someone for so many years and never realize you share a common interest. Disneyland.

He explained to me that as a young man he worked in the park, his favorite assignment, driving the main street vehicles. A wonderful job to cover college expenses and meet new friends. While at the park, speaking to guests and co-workers, he learned of a small restaurant within the park that was relatively unheard of, even by cast members. Now keep in mind, this was many years ago, long before the park openly acknowledged the club's existence. In other words, tours didn't stop there.

Well, that was it for him! He knew that once he graduated college and became established, membership into this club was an absolute must. He applied, waiting many years, and is now one of the club's senior members.

I actually grew up living 1/4 mile from the park, entering the actual park at least two times per year and visiting the hotel area and shops even more often. This was long before Downtown Disney. I even fished for trout near the dancing waters. Wow, that was a few gray hairs ago! During those many years, I had seen people entering the small door with the numbered plaque and always figured it was part of the Blue Bayou, perhaps private banquet rooms. Was I ever wrong!

Within a month of discussing my friends lapel pin, my family and I were ringing the door buzzer, reservations waiting.

Things have never been the same!

My Favorite Dish!

A few friends have e-mailed, asking which dish is my favorite. Well, I've been fortunate to have tried many of the items on the menu and my favorite, Lamb Osso Bucco. The sauce is flavorful with a hint of wine and the lamb is so tender you can easily cut it with a fork. The wonderful richness of the dish is best during the colder season, definitely a bit too heavy for hot Summer days. The lamb is currently served at lunch, but the Veal Osso Bucco is available on the dinner menu. It's also a wonderful dish, warm and hearty. I would certainly recommend either.
The Filet of Chateaubriand is also a wonderful creation, it's the club's signature plate. I've probably had it a few too many times.
My daughter loves the Sweet Corn Polenta Ravioli and my wife enjoys the Pan Roast Chicken. So, something to fit every taste.
During the Winter months, the club once offered a Pumpkin Creme Brulee, baked inside an actual petite pumpkin, seasoned perfectly, served warm from the oven. Unbelievable! Their standard offer Creme Brulee is a wonderfully sensual dessert, I think you'll like it.
The Kahlua Bomb is another of my favorites. While it may look small, the size of a Hostess Snowball, it's extremely dense, quite heavy and very, very rich. Take your time eating this one, you'll want to make it last.

The Blue Bayou-Ambiance Extreme

While most Disney fans would love nothing more than a meal at Club 33, let's face facts, its difficult to get in. Very, very difficult indeed. Feel bad? Don't!
Just next door is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Southern California. While it's located in So. Cal, the ambiance and architecture is distinctly 'Old South'. Paper lanterns, frogs croaking amidst a backdrop of cypress, a trapper's shack with the occupant still sitting on the porch, strums of a banjo, it's all there.
The Bayou is busy and for good cause, the food is wonderful. With an expansive menu featuring molasses brined pork loin, sumptuous prime rib, fresh fish, crab cakes, a delicious pirate cookie boat dessert, fresh salads, tasty appetizers, it's more than a restaurant, it's an experience!
As for us, we try to visit at least once every two months. I always request a water-side table along the rail, as we love watching guests float by as they begin their POTC journey. Yes, you can even here the famous talking skull and the joyous screams as guests slip down the first waterfall. Once I saw young chap, whilst trying to entertain his beautiful date, yell to a Bayou guests, "Throw me your bread!" I have no idea where it came from, but sure enough, a fresh sourdough roll was seen quickly flying towards the boat where the young man barely caught it. What ever you do, don't get caught tossing food, they'll politely ask you to leave!
We still laugh about that every time we visit.
The pricing at the BB is very fair. The approx. cost for dinner is $35.00 and includes soup or salad, fresh sourdough rolls, sweet butter, and entree. Portions are very ample, you will find that splitting a desert may be the best option.
Quality is outstanding with emphasis placed on presentation. Staff attire is appropriate for theme.
Living in Anaheim and working far too many hours, vacations simply aren't something we're able to enjoy. A trip to the The Blue Bayou however affords us a lovely two hour vacation, escaping into the South for a dinner which cannot be surpassed. One distinct benefit, no mosquitoes!
Premium annual pass holders qualify for a discount.
For three adults, our average check totals approx. $115.00 Not too bad when you take into consideration the airfare to New Orleans!

Lunch or Dinner: Biggest Bang For The Buck?

Ok, you've met a member and they have offered to make Club 33
reservations for you. Times are tight, everyone is being careful with their budget and you want the most memorable experience for the least about of money. Lunch or dinner?

Here are my observations, and they're just that, observations.

Lunch:

Figure your lunch with drink will cost approx. $78.00. Now, your lunch will be a partial buffet, meaning that everything is in ample quantity except the hot entree which is plated and served by the staff. Chilled meats, crab, fresh fruit, artisan bread, all for the taking! The dessert bar, while not quite as large as in previous years, it very impressive. Rich mousse, cheesecake, cookies, s'mores martinis, wow! It's good. Very, very good! The plated entree portions are fair sized and normally quite rich. So, you're going to walk out the door barely able to think of anything except your bed and about four hours to recover!

Dinner:

It's dark out, the lights are twinkling all about you and your stomach is grumbling! Dinner offers various options, these being single dishes from salads, soups, appetizers, and then your choice of entree from the menu. Keep in mind the club maintains a minimum charge of approx. $68.00. Soups and salads are approx. $10.00 to $13.00, appetizers can be slightly more based on choice. Soup/salad portions are of average size (bisques are extremely rich), appetizer portions are fair, do not expect a plate with items falling over the sides (remember, this is French cuisine). Entree portions are fair, not huge, but certainly enough to satisfy most adults. Desserts are approx. $12.00, and would, by most American standards, could be considered small. Lets face it, most Americans consider dessert a meal unto itself. Check out the chocolate cake at the Golden Horsehoe and you'll understand! Figure your basic dinner will cost approx. $70.00.
The Vintner menu is the club's five course meal. Approx. $90.00 with drink. After five courses, you'll be satisfied and a walk around the park will be most welcome.

Conclusions:

Quantity or ambiance? There it is.

If you're a big eater and really want to experience the club in a more casual setting with food being the main draw, lunch if probably your best choice. The selection of chilled seafood, cheese, meats, pate', salads and desserts is voluminous. It's a joy to eat to your hearts content, enjoying the daytime sounds of Disneyland.

If you're looking for a more elegant/romantic setting, evenings are simply unbeatable! You can easily enjoy the club, meeting the club's minimum purchase requirements, and leave gastronomically satisfied. Stuffed, we'll, that just depends on your personal capacity. If you're hungry and can swing a few extra dollars, the Vintner menu may be your best bet.

So, lunch for those who prefer a slightly more casual atmosphere and wish to sample a large variety of the club's creations and dinner for those seeking a more formal or romantic evening.

For my first experience at the club, I chose lunch. I wanted to sample the buffet and see what the club was capable of producing. After our wonderful lunch, it was only two days until the club received our letter requesting membership. Wow, that was a long time ago and yes, we're still waiting!

Spring Cleaning in March!

Today we were informed the club would be closing in March to allow for extensive cleaning and refurbishing. This is apparently an annual event in preparation for the busy Easter/Spring season followed by Summer.

Waiting Period For Membership
